Niyama Private Islands is a luxurious resort in the Maldives located just a 45 minute seaplane flight from Male, set over two islands named ‘Chill’ and ‘Play’. The resort fuses traditional Maldivian elegance with contemporary villas and pavilions to create a modern and fun destination that’s perfect for the young at heart looking for an indulgent, romantic escape. Niyama occupies one of the most beautiful, natural islands in the Maldives, offering a luxurious retreat, complete with lavish accommodation, sumptuous cuisine and exceptional service.

Villas and pavilions are either set on the beach or over the water with direct lagoon access, many with a private swimming pool on the sundeck along with loungers and a daybed. Whilst accommodation options retain some quintessential Maldivian features, they are light and ultra-modern, with crisp white interiors and pops of  colour. Luxurious amenities include an in-room entertainment system, a fridge brimming with drinks and treats, and a Villa Host service.

Dining at Niyama offers a worldwide adventure across two islands, including cuisine inspired by the flavours of Asia, South Africa, the Middle East and South America. Blu and Epicure are both casual poolside dining venues which are open throughout the day, one on Play and the other on Chill. Tribal offers an authentic cultural experience showcasing African and Central and South American cuisines, with exotic meats cooked using traditional techniques in an atmospheric setting beneath domed pavilions which resemble safari tents. Nest serves Teppanyaki above the treetops, while Edge is an over-water fine dining restaurant which is accessible only by boat. For subaquatic lunches, guests can descend to Subsix, which is also the venue for weekly glow parties and other special events. For light lunches and snacks, guests can visit Dune, an al fresco lounge with plush beanbags on the beach, or The Deli where a range of pastries and sandwiches are available. The rooftop at 'Fahrenheit' is the perfect place to watch the sunset over a cocktail or two. Guests can also choose to dine in a range of destinations across the island, with options including gourmet picnics and beach dinners.

The island has plenty going on. A fantastic water sports centre offering endless ways to explore the Indian Ocean, including jet skiing and wakeboarding. Guests can also set off on fishing expeditions, visit local islands, jump on board a traditional dhoni or snorkel with a marine biologist or discover an underwater world by scuba diving at local dive sites. For those seeking relaxation, Drift Spa offers a unique retreat with 6 over-water treatment rooms with lagoon views. Treatments and bespoke therapies from around the world are available including Ayurvedic treatments, holistic massages and medical pedicures.  Younger guests are also well looked after, with the Explorer Kids Club set in the heart of Play Island offering age-specific activities for children aged 12 months to 12 years old. With activities such as island treasure hunts, snorkelling safaris, cookery sessions and baby yoga.

You'll be spoiled for choice for dining options at Niyama. Whatever your taste, there's certain to be something on the menu. I recommend the Maldivian reef fish bouillabaisse.
